BLOOMINGTON, IN – The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women is holding a women’s leadership event on Thursday, March 29, 2012, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at City Hall Showers Building. This is an annual event, and this year’s theme is “Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment.” There is no fee for this opportunity to learn how to get involved and make a difference in our community.

The event will begin with a reception at 5 p.m. during which time participants can enjoy refreshments, network and learn more about getting involved with City of Bloomington Boards and Commissions as well as other local agencies. Following the reception, the attendees can engage in several empowering leadership workshops, a short presentation by leadership scholarship recipient, Elizabeth Lopez and an award presentation to the 2012 Emerging Leader. The evening will conclude with a keynote address from Linda Bennett, President of the University of Southern Indiana.

The 2012 Emerging Leader recipient, Kyla Cox, is a lifelong resident of Monroe County. A graduate of Indiana University, she is the director of communications and engagement for IU-Bloomington Continuing Studies. Cox also is an alumna of Leadership Bloomington-Monroe County (LBMC) and former vice president of the LBMC Alumni Association. She currently directs the experiential learning program designed to develop local leaders. Additionally, Cox is continuing her own education by pursuing a Master of Arts degree in public relations at IUPUI.

Cox is also dedicated to community service. She volunteers as the president of the board of directors for the Community Kitchen of Monroe County, is a member of the Bloomington Lifelong Learning Coalition and was recently inducted as a member of the Bloomington Rotary Club.
